Hybroxia 1 & 2 – Review

In a gaming world filled with sprawling open worlds and complex systems, sometimes you just want to blast some aliens without overthinking it. That’s where Habroxia 1 & 2 come in. These twin-stick space shooters from Lillymo Games are a delightful throwback to the arcade era, and they were the perfect pick-me-up during my recent Steam Deck sessions.

Simple, Satisfying, and Surprisingly Addictive

Habroxia 1 immediately grabbed me with its retro charm. It’s a top-tier shooter that doesn’t try to be anything more than pure, unadulterated fun. But then Habroxia 2 came along and blew me away. The sequel takes everything that worked in the first game and cranks it up to eleven.

The gameplay is simple: fly, shoot, dodge, repeat. But it’s so well-executed that it’s incredibly satisfying. You’ll be blasting through levels, collecting power-ups, and facing off against epic bosses in no time. Habroxia 2 adds branching paths and more bosses per level, making each playthrough feel like a mini-adventure.

Retro Vibes, Modern Polish

Both games sport a gorgeous pixel art style that looks fantastic on the Steam Deck’s screen. The soundtracks are equally impressive, with upbeat tunes that perfectly complement the fast-paced action.

Leveling Up the Challenge

Habroxia 2 shines when it comes to level design. The branching paths and multiple bosses encourage exploration and replayability. The difficulty curve is well-balanced, offering a challenge without ever feeling unfair.

My only minor gripe is with the upgrade system in Habroxia 2. It’s a bit stingy with the currency needed to enhance your ship, forcing you to prioritize the essentials.

Final Thoughts

Habroxia 1 & 2 are a blast from the past, reminding us of a time when games were just about having fun. They’re perfect for short bursts of gaming or longer sessions when you need a break from more complex titles. If you’re a fan of retro shooters or just looking for a good time, give these games a shot.

Here’s hoping Lillymo Games revisits this series again someday!
